Storage for your memories: keeping hold of childhood items

Do you feel frustrated by the amount of clutter at home? If you’re a parent, you’ll know how easily the house fills with old clothes and toys as kids grow.

The temptation is to throw everything away, once it’s no longer used. As your child grows, you sell or dispose of the items that they’ve outgrown.

Think back to your own childhood

Many of us have things that we fondly remember from our childhood. Old toys that we remember one day as an adult, and wish we could see again. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. We might remember old books that are now hard to find or a favourite ornament that sat for years on a bedroom windowsill.

Usually, these items are long gone. Our parents might have thrown them out once we were deemed too old for them. Some might even be worth a lot of money if we still had them today.

This nostalgic value becomes even more significant when we become parents ourselves. We all had toys that we know our children would have loved, and that we wish we could have passed down to them.

Storing childhood items

As your children grow, there will be many old toys and games that you’ll want to get out of the house. If you kept everything, you’d quickly run out of space. But, saving a selection of items now could be something that your children appreciate in future.

As they grow, look out for significant items. Identify things that they played with more often, books that they read again and again, and put some into long-term storage.

Investing in the future

Renting a self-storage unit does not need to be a significant financial investment, but is something that you can do to bring that sense of nostalgia to adulthood.

If you put aside a few items every time you have a clear-out, you can return them to your grandchildren as they become age-appropriate. Think of the smile you’ll bring, handing your grandchild a toy car that your son or daughter loved at a similar age.

We all know that storage space within the home is limited. It would be lovely to save every item, but that simply isn’t practical. When you make use of a self-storage facility, you can set aside your child’s favourite toys to create magical nostalgia in future.
